Perhaps it is not about imitation, but about making it true as you see it. A "perceptive truth", if you will -- i.e., I consider myself a sort of 'pirate' taking the treasure I see in this world around me (sometimes including artwork by others) and making it indelibly mine.
All art is relative, and though I tell my students "there is nothing new under the sun" . . . I also encourage them to find out for themselves.
