The Truth
Hi Norm,
Once you get past the "how to" questions to the list, and get into the
"why's" of doing art you eventually have to answer your own questions.
What is inside your heart that needs to be expressed. Can you use art to
communicate what you imagine? If you create a sculpture, made from any
material, that communicates what you feel, think and imagine, then there is
no deception, and your art is honest.
It's my opinion that the whole discussion of truth to material is secondary
to truth of art.
If I create a figure and proclaim, it IS god, then I am guilty of deception.
I have made a lie.
If I create a figure and proclaim, this is my conception of what god looks
like, I have been honest to myself and art.
I've used this extreme example because it cuts to the chase.
Why you are interested in stone sculpting is the most interesting question
of the moment. The wide ranging issues that trouble your soul might require
you to do a series of sculpture. Stone makes you simplify and eliminate
superfluous fluff. I wonder what you might create.
It's very curious that when this topic bubbled up, I was reading Ruskin's
lamp of truth. Very weird!
Carve good stuff!
