Sincere sculpture
No hidden flaws that couldn't be turned into a asset, no turning down blind alleys in the relationships of the different elements, no
wax used to fill minor flaws, etc. -- every decision I made in the work
was the correct one for the overall concept, for the expressive statement
I found myself making.
I found a rock , I liked it . I stood it on its end . I cut the down
side flat so it would balance and drilled it for a pin . I pinned it
to a flat piece so it would not fall off and glued it so it would not
easily come free . I called the rock a sculpture and sold it to a
friend . It's standing in the woods now and is rarely ever seen.
Was this honest work ? Is the sculpture "sincere" ? Does the rock
really need to express something ? Or can it simply be , without
passing judgment ?
