Man and Stone in the Movies
In 'The Fountainhead', Howard Roark (Gary Cooper) fails to get enough
commissions as an architect to stay in business, and closes his shop and goes to
work in a quarry.
There's an interesting scene where Patrician Neal goes out looking for him,
to see if he's been humbled, and to hire him as an architect, and he
lectures her about the name and qualities of the marble he's quarrying, showing that
he's much smarter than her, and not humbled at all.
I remember thinking how interesting it might be to leave the high falutin'
world of something like architecture, and go down to the basics, carving stone
out of mountains; or making I- beams in a steel mill.
