turp and linseed oill, and hot waxing
I should add, the turpentine-linseed oil finish that failed to harden
was applied indoors, so the temperatures were actually reasonable. I
also tried to "force" it with a heat lamp at one point, but no
effect. The finishes that did harden well were applied outdoors in
late summer. A black piece of slate under the August sun gets a lot
warmer than the house ever was. That said, Kindersley worked in the
UK, a cool and damp place a lot of the time, and his work was
impeccable, so maybe my heat hypothesis is wrong.
