VA soapstone
Hi Wendy,
I've been to Charlottesville several times, its a nice place. I've
bought soapstone there a couple of times, the first time from an
artist who I think just pried blocks out of abandoned quarries and
kept the stone piled up under his lilac bushes. Seems the area is
full of old soapstone quarries. The natives used to work the area and
then it became a big producer and then got worked out.
Another time I went to Black Pearl, I think they were under a
different name then, or maybe there has been some amalgamation of
businesses. Its in a little industrial park. Spent an hour or two
talking to an older, slightly deaf carver. Interesting guy with all
kinds of stories about places he had worked in Europe. He had this
huge block of soapstone sitting outside on a pallet that he was going
to turn into a frog for customer. Maybe his is still there. Anyway,
have fun.
