how to cut flat base on stone
I've had some success using an angle grinder to remove the largest uneven parts, then filing by hand with long flat files. I've even sprayed paint onto a flat board, then placed the stone on the board. The "high" parts pick up the paint and indicate the areas needing to be filed.
Certainly not perfect, nor sophisticated, but close enough to make the bottom about 98% close to perfect. No problems with the stone rocking or tilting afterward either. Just go slow and keep checking the flatness of the base against a flat object.
