Subject:
to guard or not to guard?
The guys on our crews had always tried to slip a grinder past inspection
that had the guard removed, so I made them all take the 180 degree arc of
the stock blade guard and cut it down to a more manageable 70-90 degree arc
before remounting on the machine. This way the remaining part of the guard
can be oriented toward the operator's body, giving at least some protection
to the operator (from disintegrating diamond segments, a rare occurrence)
while making the whole apparatus more versatile in terms of freedom of
movement during cutting. Not OSHA approved but certainly better than a
naked blade.
Err on the side of caution,
Chaz
