design transfer
Other methods of design transfer I sometimes use for large amounts of text
on smooth surfaces are (very light) sandblasting or laser-technique. For
both methods the part of the stone that has to be removed is etched very
lightly into the stone. This can be used very effectively in dark stone that
leaves lighter carve-marks, like the Belgian Limestone (Petit Granite) in
which I do a lot of lettering.
For lighter stones I heard of the use of silkscreen technique.
