Subject: Vibration syndrome

Back in 1916 the U.S. Gov't did a study of the effect of pneumatic
tools on stone cutters. (I have a copy somewhere in my files, it's
about 60 pages long)

Essentially they found two things-
1. The symptoms are all there is, i.e. the symptoms don't indicate
deeper damage.
2. it was most common the first 10 years that someone used the air
hammer; after that it eased up or disappeared. Basically, after
enough years stone cutters would learn how to hold the tool (cradle
it lightly, let the vibration pass through into the chisel, instead
of gripping it tightly, tensing up the shoulder, etc) and the body
would get used to it and adjust.

That jibes with my personal experience and that which I've observed
in all the cutters and carvers I've known.
Doctors tend to overdramatize it; they love new syndrome names and
scary diagnosis.

As to gloves, I like baseball batters gloves- they have padding right
where you hold the tool, but the fingers are very thin, so you still
have sensitive touch and control.

Quoted text begins.Hi fellow stone carvers,
I have recently discovered that I have the onset of hand, arm
vibration syndrome, HAVS. So my stone carving days are coming to an
end, at least pneumatics and power tools. My question to the site at
large is , does anyone know where I can purchase some anti vibration
gloves? Walter, if you're tuned in, I bet you do.
I tried ACE hardware, no luck and also their web address with no luck.
Appreciate any info, thanks
