There ain't no stupid questions when it comes to safety.

Life is risk, and only you can decide how to balance the safety hazards
with the advantages of not using a guard. I do not use a guard myself,
but though I have all my bodyparts I also have plenty of scars . . .
common sense risk assesment while working is an imperative.
