Subject: what is sculpture?

Thanks for that one Walter,

Of course we'll never be able to answer your question given what's happened
over the last 100 years but by my way of thinking your example is evidence
of just how much trouble the academics have got into.

Q: When is a brick not a brick? A: When its a Carl Andre sculpture

Q: When is a box not a box? A: When its a Tony Smith minimalist work

Q: When is nothing something? When someone purporting to be an artist says
it is Art.

What was even more worrying about the article you posted was that the
exhibition organisers stated "It is accepted that works may not be displayed
in the way that the artist might have intended." and took this to mean edit
the work to suit their own purposes.

In a way they are guilty of pushing the (so-called) boundaries even further
than the artists ever have, because now it doesn't matter what an artist
does, Art (sculpture) clearly, for quite some time now, is what the gallery
says it is and this story implies that Sculpture isn't made by sculptors but
by curators.

Q: When is a stand not a stand. A: When the Royal Academy says its a
sculpture

If they were being logical they should have an exhibition of stands, but
that would be difficult because they'd never be able to recognise what they
were.

All the best Clive
