stone letter cutting tools
Dear Thomas,
This question comes up quite often. My personal opinion: Guillet
Universe lettercutting chisels, made near Grenoble, available from
Pisani (Greenwich, Brentford, Derby); They also sell the "Portuguese"
lettercutter's dummy, which has a perhaps overlong hickory handle. The
Alec Tiranti dummies are excellent, or you could just take a handle &
roll sheet lead around it like the old time journeyman masons once did.
I've just been in China looking at stone, tools, inscriptions, & found
very few tools of note: only the quaint little mild steel chisels with a
leather wrapping for carving soapstone seals. The historic inscriptions
(like at Xi'an), & the contemporary stone supplies, are so good. You
will find some notes for lettercutting (which I give to my occasional
students & associates) on my website, if that's of interest. best
wishes,
Ian
