stone cutters alphabet
Thanks, Simon. A parallel in China to the reference works in stone which
anchor western typography: the "forest of stone steles" at Xi'an (the
ancient western capital)
http://www.xtour.cn/en/forest.asp
I have just been there; an especially memorable inscription among
thousands is a draft of a scholar's letter, carved in stone, with all his
corrections & annotations, the thought being that future generations can
learn the process of creating a text.: Also a seminal collection is at
the former Zhen Jue, or Five Pagodas Temple, near the Beijing zoo.It was
interesting & encouraging to experience the broad, widespread interest
in text (both as calligraphy & inscription), after so much has been
lost, demolished, or broken up.
By the way, as you may know, Chinese characters are a delight to carve,
particularly in slate or sandstone.
----Cheers,
Ian.
