Using a large hand point
Yes this tool was purchased with a 4-sided pyramid point with about 45 degree slope.
I ground it to a sharp 8 sided point with about 22 degreee slope. It takes about 10 minutes to remove 1 quart of marble.
I only use it for the very first pitching and roughing out - equivalent to the slicing stage with a big diamond saw.
I use a 1/2 inch point for regular pointing, but it takes closer to 50 minutes to remove the same 1 quart of marble.
I only have about 7 inches left on my 1/2 inch point so it probably is time to get another one.
I have 2 finer points that I use for detail work.
I'll try my 3.5 lb iron hammer next time.
