Greg,

I admire your persistence and ingenuity.

I use blackboard chalk in multiple colors to provide a contrast to any color stone.

It seems your only problem with the automotive air hammer was using a regular steel bit
for a really hard stone. If I ever move up to air tools, I may try the same sort of hammer.

IMHO you have 3 basic choices to get a granite quality Tungsten Carbide bit into your automotive size air hammer:
1 - add a TC piece to the tip of an automotive chisel
2 - grind down the shank of a TC chisel to fit in your automotive hammer.
3 - Pay someone to make you custom chisels

#2 sounds a lot easier and more reliable to me

Good carving project - it looks like a labor of love.
