Hi,
You might consider purchasing Patrick McAfee's book "Irish Stone Walls".
He provides an excellent reference for dry-stone construction.
A simple rule of thumb when concern for outside forces on stonework is
paramount, maximize the mass of the lower stones and the tightness of the
interior joints and you should succeed. There should be no reason you cannot build
this dry if you allow for through stones, tight interior joints, large stones
at the base and make sure the top is 1/2 the width as the base and the base
is bedded deep enough. If you are corbeling in the upper portions, you will
need to follow the rules for corbeling etc.
In addition to Patrick's book there is Dan Snow's book and finally, the
Drystone conservancy in Kentucky.
