I have been sculpting stone for about ten years. I've mostly worked with marble, alabaster, soapstone and agate. I've also worked with pipestone, ivory, jade, quartz, lapis lazuli, amber, sodalite, azurite and others. I do representational and abstract sculpture. So far, all of my sculptures have been under 100lbs. However, I plan to start doing some larger pieces soon. I use various rasps, chisels and diamond files. I also use a foredom. I recently purchased an industrial air compressor; die grinders, waterfeed angle grinder, air hammer, ect.

My stone carving is a process of removal, deconstruction and discovery. I carve granite, limestone, marble and numerous other stones. As a sculptor I explore variations in structural transformation and the compelling tactile geometries of organically complex planes and surfaces, Working with both abstract and representational imagery my large scale public art commissions can be found throughout Canada and Northern United States. My smaller scale pieces display the wealth of possibilities inherent in the poetics of surface and form.

The Livingstone Quarry is a home-based business that began as an art studio. I found that I had better stone selection for my own work, and more freedom to carve what I want to, and not just what I know I can sell, if I share the wealth. The stones I sell are the ones I use myself, and so are the tools. I will also teach anyone who wants to learn, one-on-one, or in small groups. I am now located in Mallorytown, ON, which is near the eatern tip of the Thousand Islands tourist region, between Ganonoque, and Brockville, and only about ten minutes from the Ivy Lea International Bridge at Alexandria Bay, NY. Although I often make more money selling rough stone, this is still primarily an art studio, and I am on several local studio tours, as well as showing at a few annual art shows throughout central Ontario, including the Stone Carving Symposium held in conjunction with the Gemboree in Bancroft, ON, every summer. That's my baby! I helped start it, and have been involved since the beginning.

I have no formal education in art beyond highschool, and until I began carving soft stone, I didn't believe I had any talent either. In the 20 years since I first picked up the tools however I have sold in some of the best known galleries across Canada, and am still going strong. Sometimes it is an advantage not to know the "rules" or be aware what the limitations are. I've been exploring the medium, and learning as I go. People seem to like what I produce, which is very flattering, but more importantly, I am still enjoying it immensely. I'm on the Canadian side of the St. Lawrence River, at the eastern end of the Thousand Island tourist district, and am active on the local studio tours, so when you are in the area, please, stop by and see me.

Soapstone, alabaster, marble "I find it a deeply spiritual experience to carve and I am constantly amazed and excited about the discoveries that can be found in the heart of stone." "I like to sculpt representational pieces. It is very gratifying to transform rough rock into a shape that the viewer feels compelled to touch, and to know that my sculptures can be found in private collections around the world." Commission enquiries are always welcome.
