In our high tech world, the age-old technique of direct carving in stone continues today. CARL BERNEY melds the beauty of stone-the “bones of the earth” - with a spiritual aesthetic. CARL BERNEY works in marble as well as limestone and alabaster. He is drawn to the spiritual traditions of different cultures, believing they all relate to the same universal source. The feminine principle is a guiding influence. He has created goddess figures, a nine-ft.-tall female oracle, as well as abstract torsos. His recent work includes feline forms including a cheetah and domestic cats. “Cats are so fluid”, says the artist. “They are natural subjects for sculpture”. A monk with flowing robes, Buddha, and Kokopelli-the mythological flute player of the Southwest-combine the spiritual and the stone in the manner of the ancients. CARL BERNEY'S work may be seen at Jezebel Gallery in Madrid, New Mexico. Many of the stone sculptures are available in bronze.

DJ Garrity is known as a sculptor, painter and journeyman along the margins of abstract expression. His world is one of long vistas and boundless horizons from the Badlands of South Dakota, to the windswept edge of Western Ireland. The expressive influence of place and a deep empathy with the nuances of the human condition are signatory in his work and elicit an intuitive sense of unrestrained eloquence, a narrative of form, color and emotion. The artist has subscribed to a series of independent studies, which include sojourns in Europe, Nantucket, Taos, New York City and consecutive tours of duty as the Sculptor-In-Residence of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota. He has been and remains a consummate student of the physical, cultural and emotional landscapes in which he resides.

Since the early 1990’s my passion as a sculptor has been focused on exploring formal issues. Toward this end, my process of carving stone is driven by an enthusiasm for fresh discoveries. I have found this is facilitated by beginning each sculpture with a foundational concept which directs my focus, but in general I prefer not to work from maquettes or drawings. My work develops from decisions made in the moment over the course of a month or more. I believe this approach more easily allows for the interplay of the subconscious which is ultimately where one responds most deeply to any work of art, especially abstract work.

My work derives from a strong background in human anatomy, and an ongoing study of organic form. For the past fifteen years, my studio has been located in the foothills of the Manzano Mountains above Albuquerque, and the otherworldly light and vast spaces of New Mexico have intensely influenced my artistic development. My artwork is not always suggestive of the human figure, but, it invariably has anthropomorphic aspiration, and many of my sculptural ideas have originated in found objects given a human quality. A shape is extracted from both its surroundings and its context, and is transformed by drawings and three dimensional imaging into a form with new meaning. I utilize stone or hardwood to carve the long flowing curves with strong edges and negative space that often characterize my work. Finished pieces in these materials may serve as prototypes for bronze casting. A continuing interest in geometric sketching also finds occasional three dimensional expression.

Greg Robertson creates unique sculptures and indoor and outdoor water features using recycled stone from the granite counter top industry. Much of his inspiration comes from the mountain surroundings of Santa Fe / Pecos, New Mexico, where he has his fabrication studio. Many forms are abstract, and sometimes incorporate mixed media such as blown glass and metal. Because he is using slab granite, the choices of color are more numerous than most sculptors use. Granite comes from over 30 countries, and the combination of color and pattern are seemingly endless. Greg likes to create pieces using the details in a specific stone, but also designs elegant and beautiful installations from his own mind and of his clients.
