Learn to carve and develop sculpture in Portland stone in the open air workshop at the heart of Tout Quarry. The pure clean natural light of Portland helps with the carving of emerging forms, greatly influencing the appearance of textures and surfaces, leading to distinctive shadows, lines and contours uniquiqly seen in the stone's quality of responding to changing light. Many people who carve stone in a Tout Quarry workshop find the experience a powerful stimulus for the imagination and are inspired by the balance of elements of sea, sky and stone that leads to new directions in their work. Working with freshly quarried stone inspires new ideas that can be pursued with the guidance of tutors who are experienced in sculpture, direct carving, lettercutting, stonemasonry and architectural carving. Workshops run weekly from May to September for beginners and all levels of skill. On the course you will be trained in the use of the principle hand tools - the Pitcher, Punch, Point, Claw, Chisel and Boaster - traditionally carried by journeymen stone masons to carve stones for buildings and cathedrals.
Location: UK (Portland, Dorset).
