I live and work on the Isle of Harris, Western Isles, Scotland and use a variety of materials including a local stone, possibly the oldest in Europe. Sometimes incorporated are other natural materials, birds may be encased in wood, whale bone or what ever I find washed up. Occasionally ritual is involved in the process. I use bronze and siver {as in " Porpoise " a recent sculpture}. I also create objects in the environment. My web site shows these and other works. Also links, CV, and writing by Iain Sinclair.
Location: UK (Isle of Harris, Outer Hebrides, Scotland).

Jean-Paul Diotte sculpte des oeuvres qui sont le fruit d'une association du langage des cairns et de celui des perles. "Stone is one of the most prolific elements in Man's natural environment, and therefore one of the most commonly used, however, treating stone as the primary component of a work of art, encourages Man to regard it in a different light. Whether used in its natural form or 'dressed' for creative work, stone can be used to reflect Man's personality through the primitive language of forms, lines and colours. All other materials, whether natural or artificial, are clearly rich in the accents and forms that make up this very language, and this is why my mineral sculptures can only ever allude to established words or phrases".

A sculptor who has been carving stone for nearly thirty years and teaching carving for twenty, Don uses stone and other materials to create his sensual, metaphoric work. His work includes imagery that is diverse in its degree of abstraction, stylization, and representation. The range of work encompasses freestanding carved works (up to three-quarters of a ton), numerous pedestal and wall-hung relief pieces, small handheld pieces, custom-site installations and functional furniture/objects. Most of the multi-element works shown uses stone as the primary material, although even most of his 100% stone sculptures are usually made from several types of stone fitted together. In addition to photographic images and conceptual sketches of his work, the site also includes illustrated information about the traditional technical processes and tools used to work the stone both historically and through to contemporary innovations within the field. A bibliography of recommended books about carving, sculpture methods, and types of carving stone is also listed.
