Cornelia Kubler Kavanagh is a carver. She looks at a stone, finds the form within it, and then carves directly to release that form. Her work is about traditional issues in art - space, mass, volume, light, form, and surface. Her influences include Moore, Hepworth, Brancusi, and Noguchi. She works in steatite, alabaster, marble, and plaster, creating most pieces with bronze casting in mind. Even the works in plaster are carved. She builds an armature, piles on wet plaster, and then carves it off with a hollow-backed rasp. These sculptrues are so classic in appearnace that most could have been produced at almost any time in history. Kavanagh's sources are natural and manmade forms - the wing, the fish, the helix, the circle, a reclining figure, shells and stones that she has collected all of her life, and pre-Columbian art that she first encountered in childhood. Her simple, direct work is tranquil and elegant, the product of skilled hands and a diciplined mind. -- Victor M. Cassidy, New York, NY, 2003.

Simon Keeley Architectural Stone Carver - My original training and experience in the world of stone, was training to become a 'Stone Mason' at York College in the mid 90's, then working as a 'Stone Mason' for Bowmans in Stamford, Lincolnshore. Then later training as a 'Stone Carver' at the London City and Guilds Art School, dealing predominantly with historical ornament/ carving. Over the years, I have addressed contemporary forms and issues with particular reference to 'Art in Architecture' which I studied at MA level, at the University of East London. My range of skills as a stone carver involves an extensive knowledge of stone, drawing nature, ornament and the human figure. Creating scale models of any of the afore-mentioned in clay or wax, making moulds, then casting in plaster or bronze. Photography is essential, archive and history of art is frequently researched for each project.
Location: UK (Croydon, South London).

Most of my stone sculpture work evolves around finding a magical place where the stone calls out to me. Then working under the auspices of something greater, I assemble these free standing sculptures to reveal more than what is physically obvious in the rock. Usually anthropormorphic detail revealing mimetoliths found on the stones I use. They are ephemeral and exist only in photographs that I take at the time of construction.

Obituary: "The first experience most people have of the sculpture of Michael Kenny, who has died of cancer aged 58, is in the driving mirror of their car, sweeping out of the Limehouse link tunnel on the approach to Canary Wharf in the London docklands. This work, which he called On Strange And Distant Islands, is 25ft high and assembled in lateral relief across maybe 150ft of wall above the wharf's tunnel entrance - comparable in scale to the Parthenon marbles. It is carved from Kilkenny limestone and, whether the resemblance is intentional or not, it recalls, in the brief moment before the car swings through the traffic lights, the timeless solemnity of the field of early Christian stone crosses in County Kilkenny."

Stone Art - Handcrafted by Ruth Killoran. I carve mainly in Oamaru stone, producing original, well finished sculptures. I like to experiment with other New Zealand stone, Mt Somers is one of my favourites but is harder to find. It has a wonderful fine texture which sands to a wonderful finish. I live in Christchurch NZ and I'm inspired by the fantastic surroundings that are on our doorstep. When starting a new piece I'm totally carried away with the excitment of it. I usually sketch my ideas first and then carefully pick the stone to suit. I lose myself in the work and find the process totally absorbing. I like to be led by the stone and follow it's different textures. You can never be quite sure what the end result is going to look like! I love that unpredictability. I find commission work the most satisfying and get very attached to each sculpture I do. Each sculpture is unique and literally a piece of New Zealand. Please take a look at the gallery and works for sale on my website www.stonegrooves.co.nz or contact me... email- stonegrooves@xtra.co.nz phone 03 331 8451, 19 Heybridge Lane, St Martins, Christchurch
