My ideas and subjects are borrowed from antiquity with each piece telling a story. Antiquity provides a wealth of resources for my work; warriors, the myths, Venus figures, beasts, demigods and shaman/priests are the subjects I appropriate. In executing an idea, the importance of light and shadow, through the use of negative space is a primary concern in the work. Some pieces attempt to stress movement, while the god and shaman/priest series attempts to evoke a sense of mysticism with surface and shape being of more importance. Each new stone, whether it is irregular or a rectangular cube of white Carrara or Belgian black, tells me what to do and even determines how I sculpt it.

Began carving at the age of twelve and later studied at the Budapest School of Fine Arts. For three years he worked with Professor Kisfaludy Szigmond, noted Hungarian sculptor. Lancz came to Canada with his wife in 1956. One of his first important commissions was a bust of Abraham Bronfman, Montreal philanthropist, for Mount Sinai Hospital, Ste Agathe, Quebec. In the following years he has done busts of actresses Zsa Zsa Gabor and Jayne Mansfield; former Mayor of Toronto, Nathan Phillips; the late John F. Kennedy, 35th President of United States of America (bust was placed in the Kennedy Library at Harvard University on approval of the President's widow); former Prime Minister of Israel, David Ben Gurion (bust was presented to the Israeli Pavilion at Expo "67" by the artist), and many other commissions including a statue for the Garden of Wonders, La Fontaine Park, Montreal; work for numerous churches and millionaire businessman.

I am continually pushing my practice forward by being aware of and highly influenced by contemporary attitudes towards architectural forms, modern designers who blur the boundary between artist, architect and engineer. I also have an artistic interest in the principles and forms produced by mathematical geometry in concepts like non intersecting minimal surfaces.

My aim is to create abstract sculptural art which is free from ideology, but open to interpretation and speculation. I also endeavour to produce sculptures which are both visually and kinaesthetically engaging, drawing the eye through the movement within the contours and lines, whilst inviting the audience to explore these contours and textures through touch and to consider the notion of time and transition in ones own existence.
