Stone is my first-choice medium for the elements in many of my installations, although I do utilize other materials that are cast, forged, fabricated and, as always, reserve the right to change my mind to suit the direction of my artwork I have been working with stone for about 40 years, producing numerous series utilizing figurative minimal elements; many of these are displayed on the Tom Rudd sculpture pages of this web site.

Ronald Rae is based in Edinburgh, Scotland. He is a direct carver of granite. He has been carving granite by hand for over forty years. The granite he uses comes from Aberdeenshire and is approximately 460 million years old. He feels it is a privilege to be able to carve such an ancient and noble stone. Ronald's sculptures express his love and concern for the human and animal condition. His largest sculpture to date is a twenty tonne Lion. It took him over a year to complete. His current major exhibition of twenty one large granite sculptures is at the stunning venue of Holyrood Park Edinburgh till may 2007. The sculptures are mainly of animals, some of endangered species such as the 22 feet long Tyger Tyger. Other works are biblical and about humankind such as War Veteran. The sculptures are at various sites in Holyrood Park in the Holyrood Palace Gardens, Edinburgh. At the end of the exhibition all the sculptures will be for sale. Several of Ronald Rae's sculptures are in public and private collections in the UK and abroad. He is happy to do commissions. He is also willing to travel to give talks and slide shows about his work.

Alison is a direct carver by hand and has been sculpting in stone since February 1999. Working in a wide variety of stones, her sculptures are generally simple, abstract forms that endeavour to express the shape of feelings and states of being. She works almost entirely intuitively, with inspiration coming from nature's profound beauty and the feminine form. She has been influenced by the artistic and cultural heritage of her native New Zealand and informed by other sculptors such as Barbara Hepworth, Constantin Brancusi and Isamu Noguchi. Alison accepts commissions for interiors, gardens and corporate or public environments.

like to think of my method of stone carving as a sort of slow-motion version of the Surrealists' Automatic Writing. It seems that my method of stone carving has the feel of trying to tap into a source below (or perhaps outside of) the conscious state. This process is an uneven and mostly constant struggle between a kind of not-thinking state where an intuitive process canmanifest itself, and a more self-aware state wherein conscious design decisions are made. The goal is to "not over-think" the process, perhaps even to not "think" at all. As I said before, this is a bit difficult, and involves releasing control and focusing on process instead of outcome which, it seems, is a good way to conduct one's life as well. Drummer Matt Wilson has said, "The more I play improvised music the less I want to understand it". That is the way I am feeling about the process of stone carving at the moment . . . Rob Reed 9-7-06
