I have not an art education. I have only my hands and my intention. I like to find natural stone, sit in front of it and watch it, until the forms emerges like from the mist. Then my hands knows what to do.

Stephen usually Sculpts stones found in nature, instead of quarried stone. Rocks found in farmers fields, construction sites, or found out in the woods. This started as a healing process, and became a lifestyle. The rock decides what it wants to be, I just help it express itself....

Realism, abstraction, and a full range of expression in between, make Mike's pieces as varied as the stone he has worked. Marble, alabaster, limestone and soapstone have all yielded to his eclectic range of expression. The experiences of being a graduate of Ontario College of Art and a retired Professional Engineer come together to produce free flowing planes at one end of his scale of expression to rigid geometric form at the other. Look for yourself....

My studio is in Putnam Valley, New York. My sculptures are direct carvings mostly from marble. Based on the human figure they present a harmonious interplay of organic forms and include torsos, standing, sitting or reclining figures. Priority is given to the symbolic expression of human emotions and interactions. The sculptures reflect the compact nature of stone, are medium sized on the average 30" high and 50 lbs in weight. They can be placed with relative ease on pedestals. I prefer that sculptures should be looked at and touched. It is difficult to describe them.

I have just relocated to Pembrokeshire, Wales in order to carve and polish Preseli Blue Stone (stonehenge) a hard but beatiful medium with reputed magical properties. This is after two years living and working in Carrara, Italy where I was commissioned to create a large sculpture for a new church in London, From the same marble quarry that Michaelangelo carved his 'David' statue.
